Wedding at Castle at Summit Lake in Olympia WA
The Castle at Summit Lake Elopement
A Romantic Foggy Sunrise Wedding at Castle in Summit Lake in Olympia, WA
Some mornings give you more than you planned for.
This January morning at The Castle at Summit Lake brought thick fog rolling across the water, frost along the dock, and a soft glow where the sunrise should have been. The sun never fully broke through. Instead, the entire morning seemed to exist somewhere between night and day, with the lake disappearing into the mist and the shoreline barely visible in the distance.
For this intimate elopement-inspired celebration, that quiet, almost surreal atmosphere became part of the story.
As an Olympia wedding photographer, I'm always paying attention to the way a place and a moment can work together. Sometimes the weather gives you something you couldn't have planned—and this foggy morning at Summit Lake was one of those times.
An Intimate Morning at The Castle at Summit Lake
The morning began on the dock, surrounded by still water and fog.
A tailored tan suit, a simple ivory gown, and a cathedral-length veil kept the overall look understated against the dramatic setting. Small arrangements of greenery were placed along the dock, but the real backdrop was already there: frost on the boards, soft light through the mist, and the reflection of the couple in the perfectly calm water below.
There was no need for much else.
Hand in hand, they walked toward the end of the dock as the horizon disappeared behind them.
For a few minutes, it felt as though they were standing at the edge of the world.
Later, they paused to read vows and take in the quiet of the morning together. The fog softened everything around them, turning the lake into a nearly seamless backdrop of water and sky.
Those quieter moments are always some of my favorites to photograph—the space between the big moments, when there's nothing left to do except be present with each other.
Why This Summit Lake Setting Felt So Magical
The Castle at Summit Lake is unlike many of the wedding settings you'll find around Olympia and the South Sound.
With the lake, surrounding landscape, dramatic architecture, and long dock stretching out over the water, the property already has a sense of place that feels a little unexpected. Add a cold January morning and heavy fog, and it became something completely different.
The conditions changed constantly throughout the shoot. At times, the shoreline was barely visible. At others, the soft morning light created just enough contrast to reveal the reflection of the couple beneath them.
It's a good reminder that beautiful wedding photographs don't always come from perfect weather.
Sometimes the unexpected conditions are what make the experience memorable.
Inspired by Intimate Weddings and Elopements Near Olympia, WA
One of the things I love about photographing weddings in Olympia and throughout the South Sound is the variety of landscapes nearby.
From waterfront celebrations and private estates to forests, lakes, and tucked-away places that feel completely removed from everyday life, there are so many possibilities for couples planning a celebration that feels personal to them.
An intimate wedding or elopement doesn't have to follow a traditional timeline or look like anyone else's wedding day. It can be quiet. It can be adventurous. It can involve a handful of people—or just the two of you.
For me, the most important part is creating photographs that reflect the experience as it actually felt.
Whether that means hiking somewhere beautiful, celebrating with your closest people, or spending a foggy morning together beside a lake, I want your photographs to feel connected to the place and the people in them.
